Authorities seize animals at Santa's Land
Staff Report | September 01,2014
PUTNEY -- Most of the animals at the Santa's Land amusement park have been confiscated, in a weekend raid by the Windham County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's department, acting on a search warrant, confiscated most of the animals, Windham County State's Attorney Tracy Kelly Shriver said Monday.
Shriver said she didn't know exactly how many animals were removed from the park, but that the intention was to remove all of them.
The deer remain at the park, cared for by the humane society and the town of Putney until they can be moved.
Assisting the sheriff's department were the U.S. Humane Society, which has its headquarters in Jacksonville, as well as the Windham County Humane Society and the Putney Fire Department.
Shriver said the search warrant was based on allegations of criminal activity, which in the case of Santa's Land was "continuing" violation of the state's animal cruelty laws.
The owner and caretaker of Santa's Land, Lillian Billewicz of Fair Haven, and her caretaker, Brian Deistler of Westminster, had previously been charged with cruelty to animals.
