With all the accolades for Sen. James Jeffords, I must add my story. Jim was never too busy to listen, and I got involved in what to some might seem like a minor problem.

Years ago, my son Steve worked for a firm, and two of his paychecks bounced. Steve was a newlywed and had recently purchased his first house, and every paycheck counted.

Steve’s temperament matched his red hair, and he was furious. As mothers will do, I calmed him down and said, “Let’s see what Mom can do.” I went to Sen. Jeffords’s office, told the circumstances, and after one letter from the senator to Steve’s employer, the back pay was received. Jim worked to benefit not just large groups but also individuals.
