Southern Vt. schools set to open

When children in the Hartford School District returned to classes Monday, they earned a statewide title many would have been happy to forgo: Students with the earliest first day in Vermont.
Public schools in Bennington, Windham and Windsor counties are welcoming back students this week, with most opening Wednesday or Thursday and many doing so with new principals.
In the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union, students in Danby, Dorset, Manchester, Mount Tabor, Pawlet, Rupert, Sunderland, Winhall and the Mountain Towns R.E.D. of Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru and Weston start Wednesday, as will new Currier Memorial Principal Carolyn Jarvis.
In the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, students in Bennington, Pownal, Shaftsbury and Woodford will start Thursday.
In the Springfield School District, students will start Wednesday, as will new Riverside Middle Interim Principal Steve Cone, the current state assistant principal of the year.
In the Two Rivers Supervisory Union, students in Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Ludlow, Mount Holly and Plymouth will start Wednesday, as will new Black River Middle and High Principal Shannon Martin.
In the Windham Central Supervisory Union, students in Brookline, Dover, Jamaica, Marlboro, Newfane, Stratton, Townshend, Wardsboro and Windham will start Wednesday if they’re in pre-K through grade 7 (as will new NewBrook Elementary Principal Scott Tabachnick) and Thursday if they’re in grades 8 to 12.
In the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union, students in Athens, Grafton, Rockingham and Westminster will start Wednesday.
In the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union, students in Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, Putney and Vernon will start Thursday, as will new Brattleboro Area Middle Principal Keith Lyman, new Green Street Principal Mark Speno and new Vernon Elementary Principal Dana Gordon-Macey.
In the Windham Southwest Supervisory Union, students in Readsboro and Stamford will start Wednesday; students in Halifax and at grade K-5 Twin Valley Elementary will start Thursday; and students at grade 6-12 Twin Valley Middle and High will start Sept. 3, as will new Twin Valley Middle and High Principal Tom Fitzgerald.
In the Windsor Central Supervisory Union, students in Barnard, Bridgewater, Killington, Pomfret, Reading, and Woodstock will start Wednesday, as will new Reading Elementary Principal Janet Zullo and new Woodstock Union Middle and High Principal Garon Smail.
And in the Windsor Southeast Supervisory Union, students in Hartland, Weathersfield, West Windsor and Windsor will start Wednesday.
