GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Two people driving vehicles with Vermont license plates were killed in a fiery head-on collision on Route 25 early Friday morning, police said.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Department in New York haven’t identified the single occupants of either vehicle due to ongoing attempts to positively identify the deceased and to contact next of kin.
Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy wrote in a statement that a gray 2003 Dodge Intrepid and a red 1991 Chevy Camaro involved in the crash were “engulfed” in flames when emergency vehicles arrived. Both drivers were dead when they were pulled from their vehicles, he added.
A witness to the crash told police she was driving east around 5:15 a.m. Friday when the Intrepid passed her going uphill on a section of road striped with a double solid line to indicate no passing. At the hill’s crest, the Camaro appeared driving west and collided with the Intrepid which was still passing in the westbound lane, the witness reported.
The impact flung the Intrepid off the east side of the road while the Camaro came to rest turned around in the westbound lane.
An autopsy was conducted on both drivers, the sheriff said.
Granville Emergency Medical Services, Middle Granville Fire and Granville Police assisted at the scene.
