CASTLETON — James A. Alexander, 71, of Castleton died Monday morning, July 14, 2014 at the Rutland Regional Medical Center following a long illness.
He was born on Sept. 8, 1942 in Boston, Mass., the son of Mason and Dorothy (Doran) Alexander.
Mr. Alexander graduated from Fair Haven High School in 1960. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War.
He married Barbara Durfee on Sept. 19, 1963 in Fair Haven.
Mr. Alexander was employed by the General Electric Company and worked in the Forge Area for over 30 years, where he was well known as the Bear, retiring in 1997.
He was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church, the American Legion Post #50 in Castleton and the Deer Valley Club in Indian Lake, N.Y.
He enjoyed spending time in the Adirondacks, snowmobiling, four wheeling, fishing and hunting.
Mr. Alexander was a diehard Red Sox fan and critic.
He was very dedicated to his family and enjoyed celebrating the achievements of his children and grandchildren both on the athletic fields and in the classroom.
Survivors include his wife Barbara of Castleton; a daughter, Denise Huth and her husband Jeremy of West Linn, Ore. and children Gavin, Alexandra and Cody; four sons, Timothy Alexander and his wife Helen of Whitehall, NY and children Kate, Jillian, Marissa and Grace; Michael Alexander and his wife Debbie of West Castleton and children Elizabeth and Erin; John Alexander and his wife Kimberly and children Jacob and Jenna; and Keith Alexander and his wife Pam and children Ryan, Kevin and Annie; two sisters, Kathy Book of West Haven and Judy Blackbird of Wheelock; a brother, Mason Alexander of Benson; two great grandchildren: Isabella and Alivia and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven. A reception will follow at the Fair Haven American Legion.
There will be no calling hours.
