A fight on Pine Street early Saturday morning ended with one man undergoing surgery for stab wounds and the other going to jail on a charge of aggravated assault, according to Rutland Police.

Officers were called to the corner of Pine and State streets at 2:40 a.m. after a passerby on the street found 21-year-old Robert Pratt lying near the road bleeding.

Pratt told police he had been stabbed by an unknown man during a fight on Pine Street. He was taken by Regional Ambulance to Rutland Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery. A hospital spokeswoman said Saturday he had been treated and released.

Through further investigation, city police say they learned a fight had occurred outside an apartment at 17 Pine St. A knife was found at the scene along with other evidence and police arrested 21-year-old Eric Furtado and charged him with inflicting multiple knife wounds to Pratt.

The cause of the fight is unclear, but police say there was a small gathering of friends at the apartment when the incident began.

Furtado was taken to the Rutland jail where is awaiting arraignment on the felony charge Monday in Rutland criminal court.
