• Wrong to limit people’s rights

    I am responding to the commentary “Broaden the debate.” In it the writer suggests adding a few words to the Second Amendment to show its purported intended meaning that only members of the “well regulated Militia” have the right to keep and bear arms, and then only when serving in that militia.

    Any right which requires membership in a specific group in order to exercise that right is not, by definition, a right. Rights are freedoms of action. Changing the Constitution this way would be akin to saying, “You have the right of free speech, as long as you are saying what the people in power want you to say.”
