Esther Carlson Johnson, 102, of Center Rutland, VT, and Sebastian, FL, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at The Meadows at East Mountain.
She was born September 7, 1911, in West Rutland, VT, the daughter of Axel and Clara (Aokeson) Carlson.
She was baptized in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rutland, which became the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was a life-long, active member of WELCA, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir.
Mrs. Johnson graduated from West Rutland High School in 1929, and the Burberry Rose Beauty Academy.
She married Harry Johnson on May 15, 1936. He died May 7, 1988.
Mrs. Johnson was a hairdresser at Jean’s Beauty Salon, before she became an owner/operator, along with her husband, at the Harry Johnson Maytag Store.
She was a member, and past Worthy Matron, of the Order of the Eastern Star #88 of West Rutland, a member of the Ladies Shrine AIROC Court #42 of Rutland, the Proctor-Pittsford Golf Association, and served on the board of the Sunset Home.
Her hobbies included crafts and golf, and she enjoyed spending winters in Florida.
Survivors are a son, Chris A. Johnson, and his wife, Linda, of Center Rutland, VT; a sister-in-law, Christine Carlson of Florence, VT; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Holmquist; her brothers, Alof and Eric Carlson; and two grandsons, Peter and Paul Johnson.
The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John M. Longworth, pastor, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1 Hillside Road, Rutland, VT 05701, or to a charity of one’s choice.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland, at a later date.
