POWNAL — John F. “Jack” Porter, 76, died Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, following a brief illness.
He was born in Norwalk, Conn., March 24, 1937, the son of John and Catherine (Murphy) Porter, and received his education in Norwalk.
From 1955 to 1957, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In earlier years, Mr. Porter was employed as a truck driver. He later worked in the maintenance department of Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.
He enjoyed crossword puzzles and was a New England Patriots football fan.
Survivors include his companion, Sandy Goddard of North Adams, Mass.; his children, John Porter of Logan, Utah, William Porter of Fort Smith, Ark., Richard Porter of Tooele, Utah, and Lori Ann Pratt of Naugatuck, Conn.; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Withall of Boca Raton, Fla., and Kathy Reynolds of Georgetown, Conn.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, James Porter, and two brothers, Richard and Harold “Butch” Porter.
At his request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal, at the convenience of the family.
