BENNINGTON — Somethings are a foregone conclusion when the Vermont State Wrestling Championships get under way. The first is that Mount Anthony will probably be at the top of the team scores.

Such is the case after Day 1 at Mount Anthony Union High School Friday as the Patriots advanced all 14 wrestlers to the semifinals and hold a comfortable 134-64 lead over Bellow Falls/Hartford.

Mount Mansfield is third with 53 points, Mill River fourth with 50.5 and Vergennes fifth with 48.

There is a battle for second place but Bellows Fall/Hartford has the edge with seven wrestlers through to the semis, while Mount Mansfield has six.

The Patriots have nine wrestlers with 50-plus wins for the season, including three that are undefeated.

Heavyweight Jesse Webb is now 59-0 after his two pins and will face BFH’s John Harris in the semis.

Austin Price won twice on falls at 182 and improved to 57-0. He will take on Ian Kendzior of Milton in his semifinal.

Troy Gassaway moved to 57-0 with a pin at 120 and Otter Valley’s Tyson Cram is his next opponent.

Calvin Call (50-8 at 106 pounds), Tyler Raetz (51-8, 113), Dylan LaFountain (54-5, 132), Damon Young (55-5, 170), Tyler Mattison (54-3, 195) and Jack Luciano (54-6, 220) have all eclipsed the 50-win mark and have their eyes on individual state titles.

Zach Allen of Mill River is the top seed at 138 and won a pair of matches. He pinned David Howes of Harwood at 1:08 and then won a technical decision (a win by 15 points or more), 18-2 over Vergennes’ Jeb Hodsen. He will face Mount Anthony’s Bailey Willard next.

In other semis, Burr and Burton’s Caleb Giles will meet Call in the 106 class. Austin Viens of BFH faces Ethan Reardon at 113, while Quinn Kimball of Mill River will take on Ben Bliss of Mount Mansfield.

Mount Anthony’s Tabor Watson and BFH’s Brendon Kendall will clash at 126. Steve Cerone of Bellows Falls/Hartford, picked up his 100th career win en route to the 138 semifinals, where he will meet John Stawinski of Essex.

Alex Legg of CVU also joined the 100-win club in advancing at 132.

BFH’s Nola Viens is into the 145 semis against Duncan Lord of Spaulding, while teammate Patrick Lubuda, who also garnered his 100th, will face Dylan Shattuck of St. J at 152. MAU’s Noble Shaler and Middlebury’s James Mason are on the other side of that draw.

Izaak Young of Mill River advanced at 160 when Connor Gobeille of CVU withdrew with an injury. Rutland’s Corey Black moved to the quarters on an injury withdrawal and then decisioned BFH’s Brady Illingworth 8-4.

Young will meet top seed Keegan Pearsell of Vergennes while Black faces MAU’s Jacob Woodside.

Young will tangle with Rutland’s Charles Whithmore at 170, while Kyle Record of BFH will wrestle Jakob Trautwein of Middlebury at 182.

In the 195 category, Mattison takes on Mill River’s Gage Stearns in the top half of the draw while second seed Aaron Borkowski of Rutland meets Kienan Kittredge of CVU.

Otter Valley’s Adam Sherwin is through at 220 and will take on Chris Gobbi of Middlebury.

Action will get under way at 9:30 a.m. with consolation quarterfinals and the finals will start at 6:30 p.m.
