Police are investigating break-ins at four stores in the Diamond Run Mall in Rutland Town.

At around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, someone wearing a black hoodie, jeans and gloves pried open a door at the Rutland Collectibles shop, thereby gaining access to the mall’s concourse and several other stores, according to Rutland County Sheriff’s Sgt. Johnathan Bixby.

The lone burglar made his way from the collectibles shop to Radio Shack, Thelma & Louise’s and New Orientaste.

The thief eschewed items and merchandise in favor of cash. The only items taken during the break in were some collectible coins, the sergeant said.

Bixby said police have video footage of the intruder along with some forensic evidence collected at the scene. He said police will release a photograph taken from the surveillance footage soon.

While police haven’t positively identified the gender of the suspect, Bixby said based on the person’s height, body frame and stride, it appeared the burglar was a man.

He said the suspect stood more than 6 feet tall with a medium build and was carrying a pry bar. It’s unclear if the man used a vehicle to get to the mall south of the city.

While most of the mall is covered by alarm systems, Bixby said the back door that was broken into, along with some other stores on the concourse, aren’t protected unless they have paid to install alarms themselves.

“Security protocols at the mall are really pretty good but at the individual stores (in the concourse) it’s left up to the owners to take care of security,” he said.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 775-8002.
