    Three escape

    from house fire

ALBURGH — Firefighters say an icy Lake Champlain and distance to get water challenged their efforts to save a house on fire in Alburgh in which all three residents escaped.

Firefighters said the occupants awoke to heavy smoke conditions at about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday. They were not hurt.

They said the fire department was not able to get water from Lake Champlain because of the ice and had to run over 2,000 feet of hose to a fire hydrant.

The house could not be saved and is considered a total loss. Damages are estimated in excess of $150,000.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation but the fire is not considered to be suspicious.
