Clerk asks about election riggingJanuary 24,2014BENNINGTON — The rural fire department clerk in Bennington is asking the state to look into the possibility of election rigging as voters prepare to pick fire chiefs and other officials.
Bennington Rural Fire Department Clerk Lexie Vincelette said she’s been told some people who don’t live in the district are going to the town clerk’s office and changing their address.
The Bennington Banner reported that the Jan. 27 annual meeting is public, but only those residing in the Bennington Rural Fire Department district can vote.
Bennington Town Clerk Tim Corcoran said when the town learns a person has changed their address, it sends a “challenge letter” asking them to verify their address. State law requires the town do this when a registered voter doesn’t vote for two consecutive general elections.MORE IN This Just In
