When the public visits www.rutlandcity.org, they will encounter the same site that, until last week, could be found at www.rutlandcity.com.

Friday, the city’s claim to the “.com” domain expired, and it was quickly purchased by a person or organization from Panama City, Panama. While the city lost the address, it did not lose the website itself. Monday and Tuesday, city officials worked to move the city website to the new “.org” domain.

“I’d like to think that, from the public’s perspective, the disruption was minimal,” said City Clerk Henry Heck. “For municipal employees, the disruption is probably more significant.”

Many city employees, such as Heck, had email addresses that ended in “@rutlandcity.com.” Now, those employees’ email addresses end in “@rutlandcity.org.”

For example, Heck’s email address is now henryh@rutlandcity.org. He, and his fellow employees, will now have to email all of their contacts alerting them of the change.

Rutland City has claim to the new domain for the next 10 years.
