    BENSON — Richard “Dick” Bowen, 72, a lifelong resident of Benson, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 1, 2013, at his residence following a brief illness.

    He was born January 3, 1941, in Benson, the son of Hollis M. and Martha (Ellis) Bowen, Sr.

    Richard married Fran McCarthy, July 27, 1963, in Benson, and they just celebrated their 50th anniversary.

    Dick was part of the Gilmore Home Center team for the last 46 years, starting with Harold Gilmore.

    Mr. Bowen had served the town of Benson as a selectman for 23 years. He was a former member of the Benson Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years, where he had served as the Chief and Assistant Chief. Following his retirement from the fire department, he still enjoyed helping out with their annual barbeque and haunted hayride. He was a very active member of the United Church of Benson, holding many positions, currently serving as a trustee of the Church and was a former deacon.

    Survivors include his wife, Fran Bowen and their three daughters: Terri Pritchard and her husband, Jim; Tammy Simmes and her husband, Lenny; and Tanya Tenzer, all of Benson; two sisters, Catherine LaChapelle and her husband, Joe of Whitehall, NY; and Mary Bruno and her husband, Louis of West Rutland; three brothers, Allen Bowen, Sr. and his wife, Mary of Fair Haven; Howard Bowen, Sr. and his wife, Shirley; and Ralph “Jeff” Bowen and his wife, Beatrice, all of Benson; six grandchildren, all of Benson, that he was very proud of: William Tenzer, Nicholas Simmes, Gregory Pritchard, Haley Tenzer, Zane Tenzer and Emma Tenzer; two sisters-in-law, Linda Bowen of Hillsdale, NY, and Suzanne Gerstner and her husband, Frank of Vero Beach, Fl.; an uncle, aunts, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    He was predeceased by his parents; five brothers: Hollis Jr., George, William, Donald and David; and a sister-in-law, Audra.

    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the United Church of Benson.

    There will be no calling hours.

    Private burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Benson.

    Arrangements are with the Durfee Funeral Home.
