On the Road: Winter is closing in fast
November is here, so remember to put on your snow tires before the first snow event. Remember, snow tires actually have to be on your vehicle to be effective and we can get snow at any time in November.
On Interstate 89 in Milton there is a bridge project that will require single-lane traffic with reduced speed limits. Blasting and accompanying rolling roadblocks continue at the ledge scaling project at Exit 8 in Montpelier, where only the northbound on-ramp remains closed.
Interstate 91 has two bridge projects that will affect traffic this week. In Windsor a bridge project will cross southbound traffic into the northbound lane of I-91. In Brattleboro, between Exits 2 and 3, a bridge reconstruction project will affect traffic with lane closures and speed reductions in the north and southbound lanes this week. Proceed with all due caution in work zones and remember operating a cellphone in construction zones is prohibited by Vermont state law starting Jan. 1, 2014. It’s a good time to start practicing — it not only makes sense, and it will be the law.
Route 128 between Essex and Westford will have crews working on the reclaiming process (weather permitting) in preparation for a coat of asphalt. Ditch work will continue at a separate work zone. Drivers can expect some delays in these work zones.
In Richmond milling work will take place on Route 2 in front of the Park and Ride followed by a layer of paving. This will cause delays due to alternating one-lane traffic. Work will also continue on the back row of the Park and Ride along with line-striping in the front parking area.
Route 2 in Waterbury will see the paving project wrap up early in the week. Crews will then work on line-striping along the newly paved roadway. Crews will also be working on installing new guardrail.
The Montpelier-managed district heat project will be working on State, Taylor and Main Streets this week. The contractor will be excavating and placing final pavement at Elm Street and Langdon Street this week, as well. Barre Street will continue to be closed as part of a culvert replacement project. The New England Central Railroad is working on the crossing at Route 12 in Berlin between Chandler and Crosstown roads, requiring a detour around the work zone. Route 12 will only be closed during the day; it will reopen at the end of each day necessitating a detour only during working hours.
Route 116 in Bristol will be reduced to one lane for a construction project. Delays should be expected in this work zone.
And Route 4 in Bridgewater will be reduced to one lane over bridge #43. Traffic lights are in place and the speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph.
