BENNINGTON — A Pownal man, who police said crashed into two Union Street homes last month in Bennington, was released without bail after pleading innocent to three misdemeanor charges this week.

Marcien L. Roy, 18, of Pownal, was arraigned in Bennington criminal court on one count each of reckless endangerment, grossly negligent driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

In an affidavit, Officer Benjamin Lackey of the Bennington Police Department said the crash was reported around 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 8. When Lackey reached the area, he found that a 2004 GMC Yukon had crashed into the porch of one home and the side of a neighboring home.

Sgt. Camillo Grande, also of the Bennington Police Department, talked to Roy first, according to the affidavit. When he asked Roy to tell him what happened, Roy replied, “So many drugs... alcohol... marijuana,” the affidavit said.

While a blood-alcohol test showed no alcohol in Roy’s system, Roy told police he had taken hallucinogenic mushrooms before the crash. Roy also told police that after the mushrooms, he had smoked marijuana because he was “freaking out,” Lackey said.

Police believe Roy was driving on Union Street and came around a sharp curve without stopping at a stop sign or slowing down, which caused the crash.

People were home at both houses but no one was hurt. The crashes caused about $75,000 in damage in total to the two homes.
