    Bail increased in

    church arson case

BURLINGTON — A Vermont judge has raised the bail for a Burlington man charged with setting fire to a church steeple.

Judge Michael Kupersmith said Friday he raised the bail to from $25,000 to $250,000 to assure that Aliaksandr Bychkou, 32, who is accused of being in the country illegally, would remain in state custody.

An immigration official testified that if Bychkou were released from a Vermont jail he would be placed in federal custody in Boston pending the outcome of his deportation proceeding, the Burlington Free Press reported.

Bychkou has pleaded innocent to setting fire to the College Street Congregational Church last month. A psychologist has determined that he is mentally competent to stand trial.
