DANBY — Laura E. Corey, a longtime resident of Danby, died peacefully with her family at her side on her 94th birthday on Friday, October 11, 2013, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Laura was born in Danby on October 11, 1919, the daughter of Harris and Anna (Twine) Herrick. She grew up in Danby where she attended grade school. She then went on to Rutland High School, graduating at age 16. She completed her studies at Rutland Business College.

Laura married John L. Corey Jr. on New Year’s Eve December 31, 1940. They enjoyed more than 30 years together before he passed in 1971.

Laura was a former member of the Danby Congregational Church and a church missionary. She enjoyed reading, especially her Bible, and watching golf on television. A lifelong animal lover, she loved watching animals and while living on the farm, had raised two deer as pets who would frolic with the family’s St. Bernard. She had a fondness for cats and enjoyed the company of her cat, Sammy. However, her most cherished times were spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laura leaves her daughter, Laurie and husband Robert Thomas of Rutland; granddaughter Tammi Birdsey and husband Skip and their children, Kelsey and Kennedy, of Rutland; great-granddaughter Sabrina and her children of Florida; sister Eleanor Gates of Plainville, Conn., and her children, Marvin Gates of Danby, Jill Paz and husband Randy and their daughters, Hannah and Lillian, of Plainville, Conn.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Harris J. Corey, in 1984 and a grandson, Johnny Corey, in 2010.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 15, at noon at the Brewster-Shea Funeral Home in Manchester Center; friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until noon, when the family will be present. Burial will follow the service in Danby Scottsville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to any humane society or animal-related organization in her memory through Brewster-Shea Funeral Home, PO Box 885, Manchester Center, VT 05255. To send condolences, visit www.sheafuneralhomes.com.
