    FAIR HAVEN — William M. Crossman Sr., 73, of Fair Haven, VT, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Proctor, on Saturday, September 21, 2013, surrounded by his family.

    He was born August 6, 1940, in Rutland, VT, the son of Harold and Doris Crossman.

    He served in the U.S. Army from October 1958 through November 1980. He retired as Sergeant First Class/Drill Sergeant. After retiring, he moved back to Rutland, where he began his civilian career.

    Mr. Crossman was a member of the American Legion.

    He was an avid fan of NASCAR, and enjoyed fishing and working on cars and small engines. He enjoyed the special bond that he shared with his cat, Douley for many years.

    Survivors include his five children: Helen Jennings and husband, Gary from Proctor; Donna Kehoe, also of Proctor; William Crossman Jr. and wife, Raina from Wallingford; Susan Best and husband, Douglas from Rutland; and John Crossman and wife, Tiersa, also of Rutland; five grandchildren, Joseph Kehoe, Michael Johnson, Jessica Wood, Justin Best and Josiah Crossman; and a brother, Gordon Crossman from Florida. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Betty Crossman, from Proctor. He was pre-deceased by his parents; two brothers, Harold and Allen Crossman; and a sister, Carol Pacca.

    The calling hours will be held at Clifford Funeral Home on Thursday, September 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. A private family burial will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, at Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, VT.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse-Hospice; or to the Foley Cancer Center at RRMC.
