Vt. ponders community placements for inmatesThe Associated Press | September 17,2013MONTPELIER - A panel of Vermont lawmakers is grappling with a tough question: how the state can provide community placements for people with mental health or other disabilities who are coming out of the state's prisons.
State officials say it can cost $300,000 to $400,000 per year to provide one-on-one care for some people with what the Corrections Department calls "serious functional impairments" as they near the ends of their prison terms and move into the community.
A special legislative study committee is taking testimony on the issues on Tuesday.
Among those testifying are Robert Appel, a former executive director of the state Human Rights Commission, and law enforcement officials.MORE IN This Just InBENNINGTON — Just short of meeting its 50th anniversary, the Bennington Car Show has been... Full Story
