Bennington man accused of assault
BENNINGTON — A local man is facing a felony charge after police said he assaulted a woman in Bennington.
Eugene T. Alfonso III, 29, of Bennington was arraigned last week in Bennington criminal court on a felony count of second-degree unlawful restraint and misdemeanor counts of domestic assault and unlawful mischief.
Bennington Police Officer Thalia Hudson said in an affidavit that police were dispatched Aug. 31 to the Catamount Motel at 2:50 a.m. after a “hysterical female” called to say she had been assaulted.
Hudson said the woman was standing outside a motel room, “in the rain in bare feet” and “visibly upset, crying and shaking.”
The woman said Alfonso, who she called “Tommy,” had head-butted her, Hudson said.
The woman said Alfonso is “controlling and possessive” and became jealous when she went to a woman’s home for dinner because he knew a former boyfriend would be there.
Alfonso punched the bedroom door when the woman locked herself in, police said. She said he wouldn’t let her leave until a woman in an adjoining room told Alfonso she planned to call police.
Hudson said Alfonso claimed it was the woman’s ex-boyfriend who head-butted her, but couldn’t say why he believed that.
A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday to determine whether Alfonso can be released while the case is pending. He is being held without bail at the Rutland jail/
