A convicted sex offender who impersonated a soldier from North Carolina while living in Vermont was sentenced to almost 12 years in jail today on four federal charges.

David Oswald III, 47, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Rutland to 140 months in jail and was ordered to pay almost $53,000 in restitution to two health care providers in the state.

Judge Christina Reiss also imposed a lifetime of supervised release with special conditions for Oswald after he is released from jail.

Oswald, a former resident of Washington state, pleaded guilty earlier this year to federal charges of failing to register as a sex offender, health care fraud, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of child pornography.

He was arrested last year after an investigation by a Veterans Affairs special agent revealed Oswald's identity.
