WESTMINSTER – Soil borings at Hadley Field next to Bellows Falls Union High School show that the outside lights installed there last year are safe, clearing the way for the athletic field complex to be reopened.

Christopher Kibbe, superintendent of schools for the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union, which includes the high school, announced the sample borings taken Tuesday at the field had revealed that the poles and lights did not pose a risk to the public.

Kibbe had ordered Hadley Field closed to the public – including school teams – last week after a Texas firm that had installed the lights refused to certify they were safe.

“Although the soil type was not the same as had originally been assumed, the installation is safe according to the engineer’s report,” Kibbe wrote in a release.

On Monday night, the BFUHS board heard from about 10 parents and area residents upset with the board’s handling of the light situation.

The board is expected to meet in emergency session tonight at 6:30 p.m. to vote on reopening the fields.

BFUHS’ home football opener is slated for Sept. 7 against Milton High School.
