    dies at age 77

BURLINGTON — Thomas Crowley, a longtime Vermont state senator, assistant judge and member of a police advisory committee, has died at age 77.

Crowley’s family said he died Saturday after he decided not to seek treatment for complications following surgery for a broken hip.

Crowley, a lifelong Burlington resident, is remembered as a charismatic statesman who served 24 years in the Senate and publicly battled an alcohol problem before becoming an assistant judge and State Police Advisory Committee member.

Gov. Peter Shumlin said Crowley was a legend around the Statehouse for his sense of humor and his determination to use his public service to solve real problems for Vermonters.
