    Danby burglaries

DANBY — A homeless man who told police he is addicted to heroin is charged with two felony counts for an attempted break-in and a successful burglary at two businesses in town.

Vermont State Police said their investigations into burglary complaints at Nichols Store and White’s Fuel Stop in Danby led them to Adam L. Cijka, a 34-year-old man described in court records as a transient.

Police say they arrested Cijka on Monday, less than 18 hours after the incidents in Danby. Prosecutors have filed paperwork to charge Cijka with felony counts of burglary and attempted burglary.

But Cijka did not appear in court Tuesday for arraignment. Instead, he is scheduled to be arraigned today in Rutland criminal court. He remains in jail for lack of $5,000 bail.

Cijka told police that he and a woman drove from Wallingford to Danby on Sunday night with a plan to break into stores to find items that they could trade for crack cocaine and heroin, according to court records.

After a failed attempt to break into the fuel stop, the pair allegedly drove to Nichols where Cijka told police he forced his way into the building and stole hundreds of dollars worth of cigarettes and lottery tickets. Cijka told police he later traded $60 worth of winning tickets for drugs in Rutland.

Police say they were led to Cijka when someone tried to cash in the stolen lottery tickets at a Rutland convenience store.
