    Hope Jerome Graves

    BENNINGTON — Hope Colgate Jerome Graves, 92, died July 7, 2013, at her home in Old Bennington.

    In 1920, she was born in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter of Hope Colgate and William Travers Jerome Jr.

    She graduated in 1939 from Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Conn., attended the Child Education Foundation in New York City and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1943 from New York University.

    She worked in the Montessori School in New York City and then was employed as a telephone switchboard operator at Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington during World War II.

    On Nov. 24, 1945, she married Louis G. Graves and they raised five children in Bennington. Mr. Graves died in 1998.

    Mrs. Graves served as PTA president and started a kindergarten in Old Bennington.

    Survivors include three daughters, Lodie Ann Colvin, Linda Shanafelt and Judith Knight; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Jerome Lindsay of Bennington and Ann Jerome Miles of Springfield, Mo.; many nieces and nephews.

    She was also predeceased by two sons, L. Gardner Jr. and John Graves, and two brothers, William III and James Jerome.

    Services will be private. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the family residence, 25 Monument Ave. in Old Bennington.

    Memorial contributions may be made to Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center or a charity of your choice, in care of Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
