RUTLAND - An intense thunder storm and high winds have swept through central Vermont, knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses, mostly in the Rutland area.

The National Weather Service says the fierce storms began around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and quickly caused outages.

Green Mountain Power reported 10,000 customers without power. By this morning, that number was down to about 300.

Company spokeswoman Dorothy Schnure said in a statement this morning that the storm brought down many power lines and trees. She said since much of the damage was concentrated in Rutland, crews were able to come together in one area and restore power quickly.

Weather reports indicate the potential for more storms this week.
