Out with the old and in with the new was a theme of the Rutland Town Select Boards meeting this week, as board members discussed going paperless and using iPads.

Selectman John Faignant was approached by a local iPad distributor who suggested the Apple mobile tablets for municipal use. He said he found it a worthwhile consideration for the board.

It certainly got my attention, Faignant said. Its really neat information.

Other board members had similar reactions, agreeing that an educational meeting would be beneficial.

I think its a good idea, said Selectman Don Chioffi, adding the idea had already crossed his mind.

Chioffi said the devices would offer a more convenient way of circulating important documents to the board. They would also reduce the use of paper.

According to Faignant, the iPad distributor told him other towns in the region have taken the digital route and found the devices a worthy investment, recouping initial costs within the first year.

Lets get the information and go from there, said Selectman Joseph Dicton.

An appointment was scheduled for July 30 with a representative from Small Dog Electronics, which recently opened an Apple store in Rutland.
