POULTNEY — Registration for this summer’s recreation program has opened and organizers are promising a fun-filled summer for every taste and size.
Starting next week and running through August, more than 25 programs kick off for the summer with about half a dozen new this year.
“We have sports, crafts, outdoors stuff, safety stuff,” said Jonas Rosenthal, town manager in Poultney.
For sports camps the schedule includes basic cheerleading, golf, Zumba, martial arts, tennis, soccer, basketball, floor hockey, gymnastic dance, baseball and mini golf.
“For martial arts Terry Bergen has been doing it for years,” Rosenthal said. “Floor hockey is very popular.”
The town and Green Mountain College are teaming up again to offer Farming Fun — a three day afternoon hands-on program at the college’s Cerridwen Farm. They are also offering a four-day adventure camp that will include activities like hiking, plant identification, creek walking and lake kayaking.
The drama camp has been extended a second week because, according to Rosenthal, the instructors love it and the children participating as well.
For safety courses, children ages 11-14 can take the safe sitter program, which teaches skills about taking care of children. Children 13 and older can also take a two-day course of safe boating with instructor Frank Callahan.
Holly and Meghan Crandall are offering a first- and second-grader weeklong camp that will teach children about vehicles, plants and flowers, sports, fairy tales before ending the week with a trip to the beach.
The duo is also offering Kinder Camp in August for children entering kindergarten in the fall.
“It’s a chance for them to meet each other before they start up school,” Rosenthal said.
New this year are three music camps for children 3 months to 7 years old with local instructor Heidi Brown.
The town has launched a new website with information. Rosenthal said he hopes the website will answer resident questions regarding summer offerings.
Pre-registration for all camps is strongly encouraged. To download a copy of the recreation brochure or registration documents, visit www.poultneyrecreation.com.
