MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury and Middlebury College are agreeing to jointly fund the construction of a new Town Hall and recreation center.

The proposal would need to be approved at a future Middlebury town meeting.

The cost of the projects would be $7.5 million, with the college contributing $5.5 million and the rest coming from the town.

The plan would create a new triangular public park and green space on the land currently occupied by the Town Hall and gymnasium, officials said. That land would be owned by Middlebury College.

“Middlebury College has been the town’s college for more than two centuries, and our futures are inextricably linked,” college President Ronald D. Liebowitz said Thursday. “We are committed to the view that what is good for the town is good for the college and vice versa.”

A town official said it became clear last year that the town office and recreation project would be too much for the town to manage alone.

“We are grateful for the generous financial support from Middlebury College,” said Middlebury Select Board Chairman Dean George.

“We now have an opportunity to move ahead, and we look forward to the public’s participation and support for the project.”
