Fred W. Berg
SPRINGFIELD — Fred W. Berg, 81, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the Springfield Hospital.
He was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Concord, Mass., the son of Freddie and Hilja (Makela) Berg.
He attended grade school in Perkinsville, and graduated from Springfield High School and the Co-Op program, Class of 1951.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On Oct. 24, 1953, he married Caroline Aiken in Chester. She predeceased him July 31, 2006.
He was employed at the Idlenot Farm Dairy, and as a mechanical engineer for 42 years with Bryant Grinder Corporation in Springfield, retiring in 1991. Following his retirement from Bryant, he worked at Okemo Mountain Resort in Ludlow as a bus driver.
He was a 45-year member of the Springfield Fire Department, retiring as a captain.
He enjoyed traveling to Maine, Alaska and Hawaii.
Survivors include a son, Peter F. Berg of Lancaster, Mass.; a daughter, Carol L. Carter of Chester; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral service will be held Friday, May 31, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel. Ernest “Puggy” Lamphere will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.
Friends may call Thursday, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
