    NORTH BENNINGTON — Gordon Spencer Sweet Sr., 82, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Vermont Veterans Home.

    He was born in North Bennington on July 26, 1930, the son of Rose (Seaton) and Clover E. Sweet Sr.

    He was a 1950 graduate of North Bennington High School.

    Mr. Sweet was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with Company I, 172nd Infantry Division.

    He married Edith L. Blodgett on June 16, 1951, in North Bennington. She died in 1999. He married Elsine LaCroix on July 5, 2003.

    In earlier years, he was employed at BenMont Paper Co. in Bennington and later at Agway Petroleum. In 1974, he and his wife purchased Cross Oil Co. which they operated for several years. At retirement, he worked as a purchasing agent for Bennington College. He also spent many years as owner of GSS Fire Extinguishers in the area.

    Mr. Sweet served in the North Bennington Fire Department, including as department chief. He was also a member of St. Peter Episcopal Church, American Legion Post 13 and the Bennington Moose Lodge.

    He enjoyed camping and music.

    Survivors include his wife of North Bennington; four daughters, Lynn Sweet of Bennington, Patti Kelley of Manchester Center, Wendy Fagerholm of Shaftsbury, and Corey Sweet of North Bennington; two sons, Perry Sweet of West Arlington, and Leigh Sweet of South Burlington; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    He was also predeceased by a grandson; a sister, June Bruneau; and a brother, Clover Sweet Jr.

    The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at St. Peter Episcopal Church with the Rev. Justin Lanier, rector, officiating.

    Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

    Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
