Board eyes ending MLK Day offMay 11,2013ST. JOHNSBURY — The St. Johnsbury School Board is considering making students in the Vermont town attend school on the Martin Luther King Day holiday in January.
School Director Tony Greenwood said the school doesn’t get days off for presidents such as Abraham Lincoln.
Greenwood said he has “no beef with Martin Luther King.” The district needs to ensure snow days can be made up and the school doesn’t need another day off.
School Director Richard Boisseau said he supports school attendance on King Day, saying the day should be used to raise children’s awareness of King and his efforts to bring about racial equality.
The Caledonian-Record reported the issue came up at a board meeting where next year’s school calendar was unveiled. It gives students the King holiday off.MORE IN This Just InHARTFORD - Authorities say two people on a 40-foot-tall railroad trestle in West Hartford, Vt.
