    Man admits to felonies

BENNINGTON ó A local man pleaded guilty to six felony charges and three misdemeanors Tuesday, the day a trial in the case was scheduled to start.

Michael A. Spangenberg II, 23, of Bennington pleaded guilty in Bennington criminal court to two felony charges of second-degree aggravated domestic assault, four felony counts of violation of an abuse prevention order, one misdemeanor charge of simple assault by mutual affray and two misdemeanor charges of unlawful mischief.

The state dismissed two felony counts of burglary of an occupied home.

There was no agreement in the case regarding sentencing. Based on the charges to which he pleaded guilty, Spangenberg could be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.

Spangenberg was arrested in August after police said he assaulted a woman and a man on Aug. 26 in Bennington, forcing the man to fight him off with a knife.

When police were first called, they believed Spangenberg was the victim. But the woman, with whom Spangenberg once had a relationship, told police he had assaulted her the day before and returned on Aug. 26 to attack her and the man.

The man stabbed Spangenberg in self-defense in the waist, causing superficial injuries, police said.

Deputy Stateís Attorney Jennifer Barrett said the state had added charges after reviewing phone records from the Rutland jail and finding that Spangenberg had called the woman more than 100 times.

Christopher Montgomery, who represented Spangenberg, declined to comment after the hearing.

Spangenberg had previous convictions from 2010 for simple assault and violating abuse prevention orders.

Judge Cortland Corsones ordered the Vermont Department of Corrections to conduct a pre-sentence investigation of Spangenberg. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 25.
