Vote in Winhall is set for tonight

WINHALL — There will be a special meeting today at 7 p.m. where voters will be asked to approve the purchase by the Mountain School of its buildings and grounds from the Winhall school district and the town of Winhall.

The vote at the meeting, which is at the school, will be done from the floor. The two questions will ask whether voters will approve the sale of the building, from the school district to the Mountain School, and whether voters will approve the sale of the ground, from the town to the Mountain School. If both questions are not approved the sale will not take place.

The Mountain School is an independent school, serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It uses the site and building of Winhall’s former public school and has been open for 15 years.

School officials say they want to buy their site and building now so they can “control their own destiny.” Charles Scranton, chair of the Mountain School’s board of trustees said the school is looking at expansion plans but can’t move forward while they are leasing their own facilities.

If the sale is approved, Mountain School officials have promised that they will fund any expansion through private philanthropy, and not tuition, that tuition will not increase more than 3 percent a year for the next three years and that the building will still be used as a public space for events like town meeting.

Scranton and Daren Houck, head of the Mountain School, will be at tonight’s meeting to answer questions.
