BRATTLEBORO — Joyce Elaine Sheehan, formerly of Wantastiquet Drive, Brattleboro, Vt., died peacefully Saturday morning, March 16, 2013, at the Holton Home, with her family by her side, after suffering a stroke.
Joyce was born on July 12, 1925, in Brookfield, Vt., the daughter of John and Ruby (Blanchard) Gray. She was raised and educated in Brookfield, where she attended schools in Brookfield and Randolph. She excelled in school, particularly in math and organization. She went on to work as a bookkeeper for Lamson’s Hardware Store in Randolph, Vt. She also worked for her husband’s photography business, KenRoy Studio, in Windsor, Vt., until 1966. After moving back to Randolph, she worked at the Randolph Town Clerk’s office 1967-68, Sprague’s Dairy 1967-68, and as a secretary for the superintendent of schools 1968-76.
A loving mother and wife, and a wonderful homemaker, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, baking, crossword puzzles, watching the Red Sox, bowling, square dancing, exercising at Curves and spending girls’ weekends with her daughters.
A longtime member of the Bethany Congregational Church in Randolph, Vt., and the Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro, Vt., she was very involved at the church, including helping in the church office, baking pies, helping with dinners and rummage sales. A member of the Eastern Star, she was also a volunteer at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital coffee shop, a volunteer for the blood bank, AARP and spent 25 years square dancing with Green Mountain Squares.
On April 17, 1945, in Chelsea, she was married to Kenneth E. Shepard of South Royalton, Vt., who predeceased her in 1966. She later married Wilfred J. Sheehan on December 27, 1969, in Randolph, Vt. The couple recently celebrated their 43rd anniversary together.
Besides her husband of Brattleboro, she leaves four daughters, Judith Jacobson and her husband John of West Barnstable, Mass., Jane Howe and her husband Avery of Tunbridge, Vt., Sylvia Cooley and her husband Daniel of Amherst, Mass., and Sharon Sault and her husband James of Randolph, Vt.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; siblings Sheldon Gray and his wife Elinor of Brookfield, Vt., and Raymond Gray and his wife Nancy of Braintree, Vt.
Funeral services in celebration of Joyce Sheehan’s life will be conducted Sunday, March 24, 1:00 p.m. at Centre Congregational Church, 193 Main St., Brattleboro, Vt., with Reverend Carra McFaddin, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow the services in the church parlor. Friends are invited to call Saturday, March 23, from 6-8 p.m. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace St., Brattleboro, Vt. Interment will be at a later date in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Brattleboro, Vt.

Thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and the Holton Home staff for their excellent care. The Holton Home became Joyce’s home since September and the staff there has treated her like a part of the family. We are particularly indebted to Dr. Robert Tortolani who has given such personal care for Joyce for over 36 years.
