READING — A Windsor County elementary school was nominated by Education Secretary Armando Vilaseca to the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program on Monday.

The Reading Community School, along with St. Albans City Elementary School and Shelburne Community School, were recognized for their environmental efforts. According to Green Ribbon Schools criterion, the schools must increase energy efficiency, provide environmentally sustainable learning spaces or offer environmental education to boost academic achievement.

The Reading Community School’s sustainability education program engages the entire school. Students are encouraged to use community resources to solve problems, faculty and staff take part in environmental sustainability trainings and the school’s food services uses locally-grown food.

Honorees will be announced by U.S. Department of Education in April and there will be a national recognition award ceremony in May or June in Washington, D.C.
