STEPHENS CITY, Va. — Denzil Jason Smith of Stephens City, Va., died Sunday, February 24, 2013, at Envoy Rehabilitation Center of Winchester.
Born on June 11, 1932, in Hanover, N.H., to Mabel and Jason Smith, Denzil graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Vt. He was active in the local Grange, the Reading Players, and as a teacher, advisor and chair of the board of religious education for the First Baptist Church of North Springfield, Vt.
After attending the Vermont School of Agriculture, Denzil worked as a dairy herd supervisor throughout Vermont and Georgia, and at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, Vt., as a setup person.
With his teaching experience from church and other youth group activities, Denzil enrolled at Plymouth State College in Plymouth, N.H., as an education major, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. He was included in the 1968-1969 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He went on to receive his Master of Education degree in 1979.
He taught for 22 years, primarily fourth grade, in the Plymouth school system. He also served a term as the president of the Plymouth Education Association and was a member of the National Education Association.
A tireless volunteer and worker, Denzil served as deacon at Plymouth Congregational Church, overseer of public welfare for the town of Plymouth, bail commissioner for the Plymouth District Court and as justice of the peace for the state of N.H. He was also a member of the N.H. Retired Teachers Association. He also sang in the Pemigewasset Choral Society for 20 years.
Retirement allowed Denzil to continue his community service, volunteering for the Mended Hearts Chapter 173 of Winchester, Va., serving as an elder for the Sherando Presbyterian Church of Stephens City, Va., and helping out at the Congregational Community Action Project of Winchester, Va.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Thompson Smith; two sons and their spouses, Kenneth and Peggy Smith of Center Harbor, N.H., and Keith and Mary Ann Smith of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren, Meredith Smith, Shannon Smith and Jason Smith; his sister, Deanna Markwell; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Smith, and sisters, Gwendolyn Nalette and Pauline Ellis.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sherando Presbyterian Church with Pastor Timothy Arnold officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church.
