    Zane Rodriguez

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Zane Rodriguez, Ph.D., of Boynton Beach, Fla., died Saturday, February 2, 2013, after a brief illness. He was 78.

He was born in New York City on January 22, 1935, son of Jose A. Rodriguez and Eloise Suck Rodriguez. Educated at Fordham Preparatory School, he went on to the College of the Holy Cross where he graduated in 1956.

It was during his early college years that he learned to ski at Pico Peak, while traveling with his jazz band.

Also in 1956, he married Barbara “Rusty” Chisholm of Natick, Mass. Zane and Rusty went back to New York where he taught at Fordham Prep and Fordham University, completed his master’s degree and began his Ph.D. in literature, all at Fordham University.

Next to raising his family, he considered the completion and defense of his dissertation in 1980 his greatest accomplishment.

While still living in New York City, he bought land in Wilmington, Vt., where he, together with his father, Jose Rodriguez, finished remodeling a vacation house. The family learned to ski at Hogback Mountain and spent summers there until the early-1970s, when they moved to Vermont fulltime with Jose.

Zane taught English at Rutland High School and Vermont Academy. A job as chairman of the Humanities Division of Community Colleges of Massachusetts brought him to Cape Cod in the early-1980s. After retirement, he and Rusty made their home in Naples, Fla., then Boynton Beach, Fla.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Rusty; children, Elizabeth (Charles) Hughes of Killington, Vt., Alicia Rodriguez of Cape Cod, Mass., Zane (Tracy) Rodriguez of Norwich, Vt., and Cristina (Tom) Calcagni of Rutland, Vt.; grandchildren, Tyler (Hilary) Hughes, Megan Hughes (Gareth) Trayner, Stefan Hughes, Teresa Rodriguez, Zane Rodriguez, Grace Rodriguez, Lexi Calcagni, Tec Calcagni; and great-granddaughter Aurora Trayner.

The family is planning a service in Vermont this summer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pico Ski Education Foundation, PO Box 6740, Rutland, VT 05702; or Autism Speaks, 1060 State Road, 2nd Floor Princeton, NJ 08540, Attn: Web Gift.
