    BALTIMORE, Md. — The Rev. Philip S. Keane, S.S., 71, died Dec. 28, 2012, at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, from cancer.

    He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Syracuse in 1967, joined the Society of St. Sulpice in 1970, and earned a Licentiate and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from The Catholic University of America.

    After service at seminaries in Kaneohe, Hawaii, Menlo Park, Calif., and Kenmore, Wash., Rev. Keane was assigned to the faculty at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, where he was professor of moral theology, vice-rector, dean of the School of Theology and executive vice-president, as well as a member of the board of trustees.

    He was also author of numerous books and articles on moral theology, ethics consultant at a number of Catholic hospitals and health care systems, and lecturer in summer theological institutes. He was known as a theologian with an encyclopedic mind.

    The Rev. Keane was also an avid sailor, Adirondack 46R, climbing the 46 peaks three times, and model train enthusiast.

    The funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 16, 2013, with Archbishop William Lori officiating.
