    Hearing canceled for Spanos

A hearing to weigh the evidence to hold accused murderer Alex Spanos in jail without the option of bail has been canceled.

Spanos, 24, pleaded innocent last week to a charge of second-degree murder in a case involving the death of 17-year-old Rutland High School student Carly Ferro.

Ferro was killed last fall in a crash on Cleveland Avenue in the city that police say was caused by Spanos who was allegedly huffing from an aerosol can to get high while driving.

Because Spanos is facing a potential lifetime jail sentence, prosecutors asked that he be held in jail without the option of bail until his trial. While Spanos has been incarcerated since the Sept. 26 crash on $200,000 bail, Spanos’ attorney requested a hearing that would have required the prosecution to reveal enough evidence to warrant holding him in jail.

But the hearing, scheduled to take place Tuesday, was canceled by Spanos’ defense attorney who withdrew the request for a hearing on Monday.
