    Richard O. Berry, 98, of Rutland died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Mountain View Center in Rutland.

    He was born Aug. 19, 1914, in Hinesburg, the son of Edward and Daisy Mae (Reed) Berry.

    He graduated from Hinesburg High School in 1932, and attended Burlington Business College.

    He was employed at the Economy Department Store, Montgomery Ward, Tuttle Law Print, Novak Printing, and was the custodian at the Rutland Masonic Temple.

    He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater, and was awarded the Bronze Star.

    He became a Mason on Feb. 5, 1936, in the Patriot Lodge #33 in Hinesburg. He was also a member of the LaPlotte Chapter #64, Order of the Eastern Star, Gilman Chapter OES, Valley of Rutland Scottish Rite, and earned a meritorious service award.

    He was a member and past commander of the Killington Knight Templar, member of the York Rite bodies, charter member of the Green Mt. York Rite College #139, life member of Cairo Shriners International and the Cairo Shrine Patrol-Drum Corps.

    He was also a member of the Order of the Silver Trowel-Holy Order of High Priesthood, the Red Cross of Constantine and the Knight York Cross of Honor.

    He was a member of Grace Congregational United Church of Christ for 64 years, the Sanctuary Choir for 31 years, deacon for seven years, and a Sunday school teacher.

    He married Avis Mabel Wallace on July 23, 1946.

    Survivors include three daughters, Vanessa B. Anderson of Proctor, Rachael M. Williams of Rutland Town, and Pamela R. Berry of Pittsford; seven grandsons, two granddaughters and several great-grandchildren.

    He was predeceased by his former wife, Avis Berry; a daughter, Theresa Ann Berry; a son, Thomas Edward Berry; and a grandson, Scott Joseph Farr.

    The funeral service will be Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Grace Congregational United Church of Christ.

    Burial will be at a later date in Pleasant View Cemetery in Middletown Springs.

    Friends may call Sunday, Jan. 13, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Tossing Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be held Sunday at 5 p.m.
