Officials still tight-lipped on town hall’s future

CASTLETON — Any future plans on the contentious town hall issue are still unknown.

For the second meeting in a row, the Select Board stayed silent Monday night about its plans to address the town offices which have plagued the town for more than a year. The topic was only mentioned when Holly Hitchcock raised the issue and the board’s chairman briefly answered.

“At this point in time we are still gathering information,” said Thomas Ettori to a crowd of about 20 people. “Today we got a report that we have not been able to see. Hopefully by next meeting we will have something.”

Ettori said they are still waiting on receiving information from the town’s attorney, but would not elaborate further.

All plans on the issue have been on hold since the Nov. 6 elections when town residents voted to approve a renovation to the historic town office building in the village, but voted down a second article that would seek extra funds to move the project forward.

Voters effectively stifled the project as both articles regarding the $1.2 million project needed to pass, according to town officials.

The only action recently taken by the Select Board came through a letter in which they rejected a $240,000 grant offered to the town by the Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation to renovate the old town office building.

At the time, Ettori called the letter a courtesy to the foundation for their generous offer, but said the town was unable to accept the grant because of lack of funds for the project.

The historic brick building, located at 556 Main St., housed Castleton’s town offices and police department. It has sat empty since June 2011, when the offices were moved after a report of extensive mold throughout the building. November marked the one-year anniversary of the move to temporary offices located on Route 4A.
