Now, there are three more dining venues to choose from: Ana’s in the Evening, Liquid Motivation and The Wild Fern.
KILLINGTON — From making empanadas from their home four years ago, Ana and Rob DiTursi have opened a third location at 2841 Killington Road.
At night Wally’s American Grill will turn into Ana’s in the Evening serving empanadas of course, along with Argentine and Spanish tapas and drinks.
“It’s going to be a place to have a nice snack and a drink with friends,” Rob DiTursi said. DiTursi said the move to Killington follows a successful run during the ski season at Killington Resort. Over the last four years, Ana’s Empanadas has served the popular Argentinian stuffed bread pastries out of a shack at the base of the Needles Eye trail.
“We sell thousands of empanadas there and have a huge fan base,” he said, “and that’s the really big reason why we’re expanding onto the Access (Killington) Road because so many people want us,” DiTursi said.
Ana’s quickly outgrew its home-based operation and three years ago moved downtown, where the empanadas are now made. In addition to its presence at the Rutland Farmers Market, Ana’s Strongs Avenue location is open to the public on Fridays. Last year, responding to public demand, the couple opened Ana’s in the Diamond Run Mall’s food court.
“Ana and I have put our hearts into it,” said DiTursi, in explaining their success. “It took some work in the beginning to get people to try something they’ve never had before.”
Ana’s in the Evening will be open daily during the ski season. Until Christmas, hours are Friday and Saturday from 3 p.m. until the bar closes.
Hilary Adams and Gene Schubert have combined their love of food and beverage into Liquid Motivation — a café located in the Pyramid Holistic Wellness Center at 120 Merchants Row.
“The food has a very clear focus on local, sustainable and organic products, healthy, gluten-free and vegan,” said Adams, who is best known locally for her catering business, The Domestic Diva.
She said the café dovetails nicely with Pyramid’s emphasis on healthy living.
The daily menu always features a hot dish and a soup. Last Friday, it was gluten-free macaroni and cheese and bean and kale soup.
Typical salads include wild rice salad, a two potato and pear salad, apple and cabbage.
Adams said she also does stuffed crepe sandwiches, which are available most days. For finishers, she serves a variety of gluten-free desserts.
Liquid Motivation serves smoothies and will also have a juice bar in the very near future.
She said she designed the menu to make it affordable.
“My goal is that people can come in and grab lunch (minus dessert) for less than $10,” Adams said
She said teaming up with Schubert made sense because their backgrounds complement each other.
“Gene’s coffee is always highly in demand so he was a natural business partner,” Adams said.
She also said there is a void in the local market for gluten-free, vegan and other dietary specialties.
“It seemed like the perfect pairing for Gene and I to get together,” she said.
For years, Schubert was co-owner of The Coffee Exchange and later at Gene’s Beans in the Diamond Run Mall.
“There’s a lot of need for organic food and we use everything we can from all the local farmers in the area, including fresh fruit for the smoothies and stuff like that” said Schubert, who continues to run a wholesale coffee distribution business that sells exclusively organic coffee.
Liquid Motivation is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.
The Wild Fern
STOCKBRIDGE — Heather Lynne’s café near the junction of Routes 100 and 107 is a melding of food, music and art.
As the bass player in the band Rick Redington and the Luv, Lynne was looking for a way to supplement her income as a musician. So, with previous experience as a baker at Sandy’s Books and Bakery in Rochester, she decided to set up shop with the bare essentials in the small building on Route 100 that has a long history as a diner.
“So, really we’re trying to do food, music and art in this tiny little place that only seats 30,” Lynne said. “We make everything here.”
The Wild Fern (named after her 12-year-old daughter, Zoe Fern) features home baked goods — stromboli, breads, bagels, croissants — along with soups. There’s a definite emphasis on Vermont and locally produced food and ingredients.
Pizza is a house specialty on Wednesday and Friday nights, with Redington, the de facto pizza chef. Each Friday during the month is also “theme cuisine” night. The first Friday of the month is Italian, followed by Mexican, then World Café (whatever ethnic dish strikes Lynne’s fancy). The last Friday of the month features comfort food.
Lynne has done the interior decorating and art work. Of course the “menu” wouldn’t be complete without some music.
For Sunday brunch, Lynne and Redington take turns, along with their families, entertaining diners playing instruments made from cigar boxes.
Lynne also has a vision for the intimate space to become more than just a place for locals to grab a bite to eat.
“I’m really also trying to connect Stockbridge in a way that it hasn’t been connected,” she said. “We don’t have a town center.”
The Wild Fern is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
