BENNINGTON — A Poultney man was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty in Bennington criminal court to stealing four vehicles in August 2011 including his grandfather’s “horse,” or the tractor part of a tractor-trailer truck.

John J. Ennis, 21, pleaded guilty to four felony counts of grand larceny and a misdemeanor count of false pretenses for using another person’s credit card.

According to an affidavit filed by a Vermont State Police trooper in the case, Ennis stole the vehicle and sold them. According to police, Ennis sold his grandfather’s truck, which was valued at $10,000, for $1,800 to a salvage yard in Granville, N.Y.

Two of the other vehicles stolen were taken from the parking lot at Mack Molding in Arlington.

On Friday, Ennis entered a plea agreement which included a prison sentence of two to five years although Ennis has been approved for furlough and to receive substance abuse treatment.

Judge Cortland Corsones urged Ennis, after sentencing him, to take the substance abuse treatment seriously so he could go on to have a “successful” life.
