    To Gov. Peter Shumlin:

In yesterday’s (Oct. 24) edition of the Rutland Herald you are quoted as saying with regard to the apparently doomed oxen at Green Mountain College, that the school should be allowed to “exercise death with dignity.”

I doubt that I have ever read or heard a more singularly fatuous statement. If you have any familiarity at all with what goes on in a slaughterhouse, you would know that death there is violent and there is nothing dignified about it.

Some 40,000 people have pleaded with Green Mountain College officials to let the animals live. You may shrug off many of those messages as being from “away” and of no importance, but the fact is, you are the state’s primary spokesman and representative, and in making such an incredibly obtuse remark you have shamed us all.

I have voted for Democrats throughout my adult life, but in this year’s gubernatorial election I will be changing that habit.
