Green Mountain College’s decision to slaughter the retired oxen is purely an agricultural business practice. The buying and selling of cattle is also a common business practice.

If there are 40,000 people who want to see the animals live out their lives on a preserve, then the obvious solution is for them to put some money together and make GMC a fair market cash offer for the animals. I’m sure that reasonable terms could be agreed to, the animals can live out their lives, and Green Mountain College will have made an alternative, yet sound and sustainable business decision.
