Not afraid of bears

Published: July 3, 2009

The lady who was appalled that you did not plaster the recent bear sighting across the front page is woefully misinformed. My grandchildren live 100 yards from a nice public park in Burlington, but are not allowed to go there alone because of the occasional presence of suspicious-looking individuals. The likelihood of injury from an errant black bear? Negligible in the extreme. The likelihood of injury to unattended children from a suspicious-looking individual? Give me a bear any time.

READER COMMENTS

Mr. Reay is quite correct to guard his little ones from "suspicious-looking individuals" in the public park but he should also be wary of those from his own family and among his friends who may pose the larger threat to kids. Sadly, the bulk of child molesters are not strangers at all; they're usually well-known to the kids and their parents.
