A group of 60 health care providers serving Fletcher Allen have written the Legislature with a proposal they say could shave some of the impending $80 million Medicaid deficit by trimming coverage for elective circumcisions.

"No national or international medical organization reccomends infant circumcision," the letter, addressed to all Senators, said. The letter noted that most private health insurance companies have stopped paying for the procedure, and that 13 other states have eliminated coverage for elective circumcisions.

"We believe it is time for Vermont to optimize the return on its health care dollars, and while this is only a small part of that, we still need to stop funding unnecessary procedures such as elective circumcisions because every dollar counts and $1 spent on a circumcision is $1 that can't pay for required care."
